The Weather at Attenborough

Each month we can bring you details of the weather at Attenborough with data from our digital weather station.

January : Frost Bittern!

The first nine days recorded minimum temperatures well below freezing with up to 90% of the lakes frozen; some of the ice in sheltered areas not melting until the 24th!  Snow falling on the 5th left a covering of 5cm which lasted several days, turning to a frozen slush which made walking around the reserve very tricky.  Sleety snow fell all day during the 13th with a covering of 3cm by dusk; the 13th was the ‘coldest day’ with the maximum temperature only 0.8oC!
Due to the length of time that the lakes were frozen, Reserve staff implemented supplementary feeding for over-wintering bitterns. Fish were thrown into the reed beds in Clifton Pond.

From the 20th, rain and a continuing thaw led to flooding of some Reserve paths and wet/muddy conditions under foot. The month ended with some frosts and a return to ice on some ponds. Aside from the low temperatures, the month will also be remembered for lots of cloud and gloomy days
