Foundation Level

The following activities are suitable for nursery, preschool and Foundation stage children from 2 to 5 years old. Sessions last for approximately one hour. Pick your own selection of three activities for a full day or two for a half day. Please feel free to contact the Education Team for advice, further information or to discuss your particular needs. Programmes can be tailored to your specifications.

Exploring Attenborough

All year
Use your senses to explore Attenborough through the eyes, ears and nose of our wild inhabitants. Test your observation skills by following tracks and trails.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic

All year
Bring along your favourite Ted or another furry friend to enjoy a picnic in the wood! Find Ted’s friends in the wood, play a camouflage party game and make your own picnic food!

Terrific Trees

All year
Ever wanted to hug a tree? Get up close and personal as you make your very own leafy friend! Use your senses to explore the woods and discover which animals make their homes in and around trees. Activities will be adapted to have a seasonal emphasis.

Woodland Symphony

All year
Let the trees inspire you to make natural musical instruments and art. Listen to the sounds of the wood and compose a symphony which will be performed against a backdrop of trees!

Patterns and Numbers in Nature

All year
Help us find the Five Little Ducks who are playing hide and seek on the Reserve and carry out some simple mathematical challenges along the way.

Wild About Art

All year
Let the natural world inspire your creations. Use natural and/or recycled materials to make sculptures, collages, masks, mobiles ...... the list is endless!Sessions can be themed to focus on colour, texture, sound, leaves, myths and legends or whatever takes your fancy!

The Little Cloud

All year
We’ll use Eric Carle’s delightful story to look at cloud shapes, sky colours and simple weather processes. Make your own cloud shapes and link weather conditions to animal homes and shelter.

Busy Birds

Spring
Find out why birds are so busy in the Spring as you make your own bird’s nest and collect some yummy worms to feed your hungry chicks! This can be linked to making bird feeders or collecting nesting materials to take home.

Life in Water

Spring and Summer
Get the nets out and have a go at the ever popular pond dipping! Use pond magnifiers and id charts to explore the amazing diversity of life in the water. Discover some weird and wonderful life cycles through story telling and an exciting number trail!

Marvellous Minibeasts

Spring and Summer
Explore the fascinating world of bugs and creepy crawlies! Go on a minibeast safari and find out where minibeasts like to live. Find out why bees (and other insects) get in such a buzz over flowers and look at minibeast adaptations such as camouflage.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Spring, Summer and Autumn
Read the popular classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and help make a special caterpillar for you to take home. Search the wood for the Caterpillar’s favourite food and learn about the butterfly life cycle.

Ten Tiny Seeds

Spring and Summer
Read this beautiful story and learn about simple plant life cycles and the parts of a plant. Find out what a seed needs to grow and the challenges they face in the fight to survive!
